St. Johns County, Florida — A 12-year-old student has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding a mini dirt bike near a crosswalk outside his school, authorities said.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, along Longleaf Pine Parkway near Patriot Oaks Academy.

The child, whose name has not been publicly released, was riding a 99cc gas-powered mini dirt bike when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old.

Student Succumbs to Injuries

Officials confirmed the boy died from his injuries on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The Sheriff’s Office said the Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“The 17-year-old driver involved is cooperating with law enforcement,” authorities said. “Based on current evidence, no charges have been filed.”

Investigators added that additional information will be released if necessary as the case remains under review.

Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene

Students and neighbors described seeing emergency crews respond to the area shortly after the crash.

“I looked out of my window, I could see an ambulance, and I could see a bunch of police lights, and I saw a paramedic giving a kid CPR,” one classmate told local media with parental permission.

Parents in the area also voiced concerns about road safety near schools.

“It’s a big issue here in St. Johns County. I don’t think it’s safe at all,” one parent said, referring to traffic and safety conditions near the school.

School Community in Mourning

In a letter to families, Patriot Oaks Academy Principal Drew Chiodo expressed grief over the loss.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I share the news of the unexpected passing of one of our beloved Patriot Oaks Academy Chargers,” Chiodo wrote.

He extended condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates and teachers, acknowledging that the coming days would be difficult for the school community.

The principal said school counselors, along with members of the district’s crisis response team, would be available to provide support. Additional mental health professionals will remain on campus as needed.

Community Plans to Honor Student

On Feb. 19, Chiodo announced the school would hold a show of unity in memory of the student.

Students, staff and families were encouraged to wear red, white and blue as a gesture of appreciation for the support surrounding the school and to celebrate the spirit of the community.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
